Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered Gallium after studying spectra of the chemical elements for 15 years. In 1875 he reported that he had discovered a new element. After the discovery he suggested that his new element would be named Gallium. The name was given in honor of the ancient name for France, Gallia.
